Aïnova Dress

This is what you’ll need:

  • 3ply cotton yarn
  • 3mm hook
  • Embroidery needle
  • Buttons

Stitch abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • yo = yarn over
  • clst = cluster stitch
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • twsc = twisted single crochet
  • sc = single crochet

Note: Start by figuring out the size of the dress by measuring the girl, you’re making the dress for, right on the arms (Aïnova is 50cm/19.6inch). Than measure her from right under the arms to right above the knees (Aïnova is 30cm/11.8inch).

Sunburst Granny Square

Magic ring, ch3 (first dc), 15dc in ring, close with sl st (16)sl st between dc of last row, loosen loop on hook and puff st in same spot (yo, pull up a loop; 3 times, yo and pull through 5 loops), ch1* puff st, ch1 * between every st of last row, sl st (32)sl st to next ch space, loosen loop on hook and cluster st (yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops; 4 times, yo and pull through 5 loops), ch2* clst, ch2 * in each ch space throughout, sl st (48)sl st to next ch space, ch4 (= first trc), 2trc in same spot, ch3, 3trc in same spot, 3dc in the next ch space, 3hdc in next ch space, 3dc in next space,  * 3trc-ch3-3trc in next ch space, 3dc in the next ch space, 3hdc in next ch space, 3dc in next space, * repeat and sl st (72)sl st in the next st, sl st in next ch space, ch3 (= first dc), 2dc-ch3-3dc in same ch space, 3dc in next 4 spaces, 3dc-ch3-3dc in next ch space * 3dc in next 4 spaces, 3dc-ch3-3dc in next corner space * repeat and sl st (96)Fasten off and make more ( I made 6)

Attach them together using wip stitch with right side facing each otherAdd 1 or more rows of dc on one side to get the right size for your dress (I added 3 rows to get 50cm/19.6inch)

Buttons + button holes

Sew the buttons on the last dc rowMake button holes on the other side. This is how I did it: attach yarn with sc in the corner ch space, 1sc in 3rd ch of the corner space, ch4, skip 3st, sc in the next 4st, ch4, skip 3st, sc in the next 4st, ch4, skip 3st, 1sc next st and 1sc in corner space (24)Add 1 row of sc

2hdc in each st along the edge of squaresThen go on with rows of 1hdc in each st, until dress is long enough (my dress has 40 rows to get 30cm/11.8inch)

Last row: 1twsc in each st

First, add 2 rows of sc on the top side of the granny squaresFigure out the size for the straps, by putting it on and measuring from front to back. Also, figure out the width you want and the right spot. This depends on the size of the girl that you’re making the dress for.

Then add the straps using sc (my straps are 4st wide and 58 rows long), attach the straps on the other side and you’re done

This dress is so pretty, Inge. Thank you for the pattern. Which specific 3 ply yarn did you use?

Hi Siyasiya! I used cotton yarn from a local store here in The Netherlands. They don’t sell it anywhere else I’m afraid. But you can use any other kind of 3ply cotton yarn. Just make sure the label recommends hook 2,5mm – 3,5mm

Very cute little sundress. Unfortunately I don’t have access to the babe in question. She lives in Tokyo and I in Baltimore USA. Do you have any suggestions on sizing?
